Supply Chain Management In today’s world, the long term survival of any business entity is dictated by the efficient supply and delivery process that entity has implemented. To succeed in a dynamic demand and supply environment, companies must ensure that proper coordination is effected between their suppliers and their customers until the last of the supply chain demands are satisfied without delay. This necessitates the need for tracking the inventory on-hand augmented by a good order and supply management. This is very crucial to cost control, ability to supply on demand, maintain market control and eventual profitability. To meet this critical need to handle the demand and supply effectively, Supply Chain Management (SCM) is an important component. Companies are investing millions of Dollars in SCM products and applications. With SCM, a business can estimate future demand for its products, enabling planners to accurately estimate future need for supplies, and extends to "execution" with the planning of their plants, transportation, and logistics. With much of competition from many global players in the market, companies and supply chain businesses face multiple challenges. Material and production costs must be minimized without sacrificing quality or timeliness. Inventory levels must be optimized to keep the balance sheet healthy. Orders get shipped within hours, and when that isn’t feasible, customers must be notified promptly of delays. Today’s customers’ demands are unlike those in the past and more towards increased flexibility and perfection. Without the help of advanced technology that is available today, the supply, tracking consignments and getting them delivered to the end user will not be easy. Many companies have either set up or deal with worldwide manufacturing centers for their products and goods. Now a days, many raw materials and part finished goods as well as suppliers are located in many parts of the world. This increases complexity of not only having to coordinate over vast distances, but also to deal with time differences as well. In any supply chain, there is one last entity on which the entire process depends on; “the customer”. All manufacturers, suppliers, distributors and retailers will only be successful, if they collaborate with each other in satisfying the “customer” demand. If one supply chain fails to meet the demand there will be a chain reaction that will eventually affect the end customer supply resulting in customer taking there business elsewhere.
